WITH DIFFERENT EYES: A Covid Waltz in Words & Images

By Paul Smart and Richard Kroehling

WITH DIFFERENT EYES began as newspaper stories and a daily blog in the late winter of 2020 when the coronavirus began to spread. Paul Smart, a renowned Hudson Valley journalist of 30-plus years, reported on the unfolding pandemic: a temporary lockdown, New York on Pause, workers sent home and schools closed. Then George Floyd was murdered. Protests spread, met by an increasingly belligerent institutional response. Violence spiraled as Trump doubled down on his bid for reelection. Smart records the impact of these events on his family as he tries to captain his family through this collective nightmare.

Richard Kroehling, who lives in Cold Springs, is an accomplished filmmaker, installation artist and painter. His enforced isolation during COVID allowed him the time and space to mount his own visual exploration on the theme of loss.

WITH DIFFERENT EYES is deeply personal duet between a writer and visual artist. It reflects the events of an extraordinary year, crystallizing them for posterity.

This fine, limited-edition book was designed by Anja Aronski, formerly of Taschen and now working freelance in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. It was printed by the master printers at Grafica Premier in Toluca, Mexico.
